UML weighs young MP Suhang Nembang for parliamentary party leader

Following one of the worst election performances in UML's history, with the party reduced to just 25 seats, young MP Suhang Nembang from Ilam-2 is being considered as a candidate for parliamentary party leader.

Nembang, 36, secured 22,426 votes with a margin of 7,776, making his win one of the most comfortable among UML's nine directly elected MPs. He was first elected in a 2024 by-election after the death of his father, former Constituent Assembly Chair Subas Nembang.

Party insiders say Nembang is preparing to position himself as a bridge between the older generation's contributions and the youth-led political wave that defined the 2026 elections. Senior figures like Vice Chair Ram Bahadur Thapa and former Vice Chair Guru Baral are also expected to be considered.

The final choice will emerge from internal party processes; Neelopatra will report the outcome once UML formally decides.
